Courtyard L is designed as a 51-unit apartment. The site is located in the heart of Capitol Hill at the corner of 12th Avenue E and E John Street. From this central location, many restaurants, shops, parks and transportation are easily accessible including the Capitol Hill Light Rail Station under construction adjacent to Cal Anderson Park. In response to the accessibility of the site, no parking is provided.
The design responds to the L-shaped lot by providing a prominent corner at 12th and John and a bar along 12th Avenue E that is interrupted by a central courtyard. The courtyard carves into the site and provides all units with access to the shared outdoor spaces as well as ample light and air. Exterior walkways and decks create a network of communal and private spaces at multiple levels and connect the project together with fluid lines. A shared roof deck provides additional outdoor space as well as potential views towards downtown.
