Project: Cary Forward

Neighborhood: Richmond, Virginia

Status: On the Boards

Building Type: Museum

The design of Cary Forward, in collaboration with artist Paul Rucker, transforms an existing structure on Cary Street in Richmond, Virginia, into a museum that immerses visitors in the often-overlooked histories of oppression and resilience. The architectural approach carefully integrates materials, lighting, and spatial organization to evoke the emotional weight of the artifacts on display, creating an environment that is both welcoming and thought-provoking. The transition from the street into the gallery is designed as a deliberate threshold, marking a shift from everyday life to deep historical engagement. Inside, a series of exhibition and support spaces house an extensive collection of over historical artifacts, alongside a banned-book library, digital archives, and spaces for public programs and community dialogues. By balancing openness with contemplation, the design fosters an interactive and educational experience that challenges visitors to confront history while inspiring reflection and change.

An exhibition space sits above an underground level used as a workspace for artists, including a studio for podcasting and other digital production. A coffee shop at the entrance provides a gathering space for museum goers and visiting artists.
